What is sensory processing?

The Sensory Profile (Sensory Processing Questionnaire) evaluates how your nervous system processes and integrates sensory information from the environment. Sensory processing differences are common in autism spectrum conditions, ADHD, fibromyalgia, and various neurological conditions. Key patterns include hypersensitivity (intense reactions to ordinary stimuli) and hyposensitivity (needing stronger stimuli to notice them). These differences can significantly impact daily life, professional choices, and social relationships.

Sensory modalities assessed

The SPQ evaluates 8 sensory modalities: hearing (loud sounds, background noise), vision (bright lights, complex visual stimulation), touch (textures, unexpected physical contact), taste and smell (food sensitivities, fragrances), proprioception (body position awareness), the vestibular system (balance, movement), and interoception (internal body signals: hunger, pain, temperature). Marked hyper- or hyposensitivity across several modalities may indicate a significant sensory processing difference.

About the SPQ test

This test is based on the Sensory Processing Questionnaire (SPQ), a clinically validated instrument for assessing sensory profiles in adults. It is particularly used in autism and ADHD assessments. Results identify your hyper- and hyposensitivity profiles by sensory modality, with practical adaptation recommendations.
