What is screen / internet addiction?

Screen or internet addiction (Internet Addiction Disorder) is a problematic and compulsive use of internet, social media, video games, or smartphone that interferes with daily functioning. Although not officially classified in DSM-5, online gaming addiction (Internet Gaming Disorder) is recognised as a condition requiring further study. Studies suggest 1–8% of the population may have problematic internet use, with higher rates among people with ADHD, autism, or depression.

Signs of problematic use

Signs of screen addiction include: constant preoccupation with online activities, inability to reduce or control use despite wanting to, feelings of withdrawal or anxiety when access is impossible, using screens to escape negative emotions, lying about time spent online, and negative impact on work, studies, or relationships. Tolerance (needing progressively more screen time) is also a key indicator.

About the IAT

This test is based on the Internet Addiction Test (IAT), developed by Dr Kimberly Young (1998) and translated and validated in numerous countries. The IAT is the most widely used internet addiction measurement instrument in the global scientific literature. A high score indicates problematic use warranting particular attention or professional consultation.
