Copper and the Brain: What the Science Says (and Why Hair Mineral Tests Are Not the Answer)

Copper is genuinely important for brain chemistry, but hair tissue mineral analysis is not a validated way to test it. Here is what the actual research says about copper, mood, cognition and sleep.

Copper is often presented online as a hidden cause of anxiety, brain fog and sleep problems, usually alongside a hair tissue mineral analysis (HTMA) test that promises to reveal your mineral "imbalances." The idea has a kernel of real biology, but the leap to a hair test as a diagnostic tool is where the science gets shaky. Here is what is actually known about copper and the brain, and why HTMA is not the tool most researchers or clinicians would reach for.

Why copper matters for the brain

Copper is an essential trace mineral, and the body uses tiny amounts of it as a cofactor for several enzymes directly involved in brain chemistry. Dopamine-beta-hydroxylase, a copper-dependent enzyme, converts dopamine into norepinephrine - a step central to attention, arousal and stress response. Ceruloplasmin, the main copper-carrying protein in blood, also has antioxidant functions, and superoxide dismutase (SOD1) uses copper to help neutralize oxidative stress in cells, including neurons. In short: copper is genuinely necessary for normal neurological function, in the right amount.

What the research actually shows

The clearest evidence that copper dysregulation can harm the brain comes from Wilson's disease, a rare genetic disorder in which copper accumulates to toxic levels in the liver and brain, producing psychiatric symptoms (mood changes, cognitive decline, sometimes psychosis) alongside movement problems. Outside of this rare condition, research linking copper levels (or copper-to-zinc ratios) to conditions like ADHD, anxiety or schizophrenia is more limited and mostly correlational - some studies report altered blood copper or ceruloplasmin levels in these populations, but findings are inconsistent across studies, and a correlation in blood does not establish that copper caused the symptoms or that correcting it would treat them.

A caution about hair tissue mineral analysis (HTMA)

HTMA, marketed as a way to detect mineral "imbalances" from a lock of hair, is popular in some wellness and functional-medicine circles - but it is not the test used in actual copper-related medical diagnoses. Hair mineral content is affected by external factors unrelated to internal mineral status: hair color, hair treatments, shampoo, environmental exposure and hair growth rate all influence results. Studies examining HTMA's reliability have found poor reproducibility between labs testing the same hair sample, and no professional medical body (endocrinology, toxicology or psychiatry) recognizes it as a validated diagnostic tool. Genuine copper disorders, including Wilson's disease, are diagnosed with blood tests (serum copper, ceruloplasmin) and, when needed, a 24-hour urine copper test - ordered and interpreted by a physician.

What to do if you are concerned

If anxiety, brain fog or sleep problems persist despite the usual approaches, that is worth investigating - just not with a retail hair mineral kit.
