Autistic Masking (CAT-Q)
The Camouflaging Autistic Traits Questionnaire (CAT-Q) is a 25-item self-report tool developed by Dr Laura Hull and colleagues at University College London in 2018 to measure how much a person masks or camouflages their autistic traits in social situations. Masking includes three behaviours: compensation (using learned strategies to hide difficulties), masking (hiding autistic behaviours), and assimilation (trying to fit in). A total score of 100 or higher suggests high levels of camouflaging and is associated with increased likelihood of autism — particularly in women and late-diagnosed adults.
