Boron and Autism: What a New Rat Study Found (and Why You Should Not Take Boron Supplements Because of It)

A viral post claims low-dose boron improved autism-like symptoms. The real study exists - but it was in rats, using a lab technique very different from taking a supplement.

A post claiming that "low-dose boron improved learning, social interaction, reduced brain inflammation, and protected nerve cells" in autism is circulating - and there is a real study behind it. But the details matter a lot here, more than in most of the claims we fact-check, because the substance involved (boric acid) is also a known toxin at high doses. Here is what the study actually did.

What the study actually did

Published in Biological Trace Element Research in 2024, the study used 32 male rats divided into three groups: healthy controls, an autism model group, and a boron-treated group. The "autism model" was created by injecting propionic acid directly into the rats' brain ventricles, a well-established way researchers simulate autism-like changes in animals, based on the idea that certain gut bacteria byproducts may influence brain development and behavior. This is not the same as autism in humans; it is a laboratory model researchers use because it reliably produces autism-like behavioral and inflammatory changes in rodents.

What the boron did

The rats that received boron, in the form of boric acid, at a low dose of 4 milligrams per kilogram of body weight, showed improved learning and social interaction compared to the untreated autism-model group. Their brains also showed less inflammation: fewer pro-inflammatory cytokines, less activation of microglia and astrocytes (the brain's immune cells), and more surviving Purkinje cells, a type of neuron that is often reduced in the brains of autistic people found in postmortem studies. The researchers propose that boron has a neuroprotective, anti-inflammatory effect in this model.

Why this is not a reason to take a boron supplement

A few things get lost when this becomes a caption. First, this is a rat study using a chemically induced model, not a study in autistic people; whether the same effect would appear in humans, at what dose, and safely, is unknown. Second, and importantly, boric acid is toxic at higher doses. It is used as a pesticide and an antiseptic, and boron supplements sold to the public are not standardized the way a research-grade dose delivered by scientists is. A rat dose in milligrams per kilogram does not translate directly or safely to a human dose; that kind of conversion is exactly the sort of thing toxicologists and physicians calculate carefully, not something to estimate from a body-weight ratio at home. Third, this is a single study; findings like this need replication before they mean much.

What this is genuinely useful for

This kind of research adds to a growing body of work connecting neuroinflammation, the gut-brain axis, and autism-like behavior in animal models, which is a legitimate and active area of study. It is a lead for future research into anti-inflammatory approaches, not a supplement recommendation.
