What is Misophonia?
Misophonia is a strong, often involuntary emotional reaction, ranging from irritation to intense anger or disgust, triggered by specific everyday sounds such as chewing, breathing, tapping or sniffing. It is not simply finding a sound annoying: for people with misophonia, certain sounds can trigger a genuine fight-or-flight response.
Why it matters
Misophonia can significantly affect relationships, work and shared meals, since the triggering sounds are often produced by people close to you and are difficult to avoid. A 2022 consensus definition, developed by an international group of researchers and clinicians, was a major step toward taking the condition seriously and improving how it is studied and treated.
About this test
MisoQuest is a validated 14-item questionnaire developed by Siepsiak and colleagues (2020) with strong psychometric properties. Misophonia is not yet an official diagnostic category, but research is growing quickly; a high score suggests your reactions resemble those of people identified with misophonia in studies, worth discussing with an audiologist or psychologist.
