Did Autism Shape Human Evolution? What the Real Archaeology Says

A viral post says autistic traits were championed 100,000 years ago and shaped human evolution. Here is the real archaeology behind the claim, and where it overreaches.

A widely shared post claims that 100,000 years ago, prehistoric hunter-gatherer communities "championed" autistic traits, that cave art proves autistic artists shaped early human culture, and that this is why autism-linked genes persisted. It cites real archaeologists. So what is actually in the research?

The Real Research Behind the Claim

The core source is a genuine paper: Spikins, Wright and Hodgson (2016), published in the journal Time and Mind. The authors, archaeologists at the University of York, propose that around 100,000 years ago a shift toward what they call "collaborative morality", a more group-oriented, cooperative social structure, changed how hunter-gatherer bands treated people whose cognition did not fit the social norm.

Their argument: someone with exceptional memory, intense focus on detail, or a strong grasp of patterns in animal behavior or plant cycles would have been genuinely useful to a small band's survival, tracking, foraging, toolmaking, even if that same person struggled with everyday small talk. In a more flexible, cooperative social structure, that kind of cognitive variation could be integrated as a specialist role rather than pushed out.

Where the Viral Post Overreaches

This is a real, published, peer-reviewed hypothesis, not proof of what actually happened 100,000 years ago. Several things the post presents as settled fact are not:

  • You cannot diagnose autism from bones. There is no skeletal or genetic marker that identifies autism in prehistoric remains. This is a behavioral and social hypothesis about group structure, not a diagnosis of specific ancient individuals.
  • Cave art cannot be attributed to autistic artists. Spikins herself, in University of York press materials about this research, was explicit: "you can't say some of it was drawn by someone with autism, but there are traits that are identifiable." That is a much more cautious claim than the post's confident statement that paintings "match the local-processing visual style commonly found in autistic artists."
  • There is no genetic study behind the "genes persisted" claim. No ancient-DNA analysis or selection study is cited, because none exists showing that specific autism-associated gene variants were positively selected because of this social shift. The hypothesis is about social integration, not genetics.

What This Means

Strip away the overclaiming and there is still something genuinely interesting here: a serious, published archaeological hypothesis that human groups have long benefited from cognitive diversity, and that traits associated with autism, intense focus, exceptional memory, strong pattern recognition, may have had real, specific value in small, cooperative communities. That is a meaningfully different claim from "science proved autism shaped evolution 100,000 years ago", but it is still a genuinely validating one: it suggests neurodivergent cognitive styles are not a modern deviation from some ancestral norm, but one of several ways human cognition has varied for a very long time.
