A recurring style of post, usually from companies selling DNA reports, argues that ADHD is "nutrient-dependent": your variants in genes like COMT, MAOA, SLC6A3, DRD2 and DRD4 shape your dopamine chemistry, dopamine synthesis depends on nutrients like vitamin C, magnesium, B6, riboflavin, zinc, choline and omega-3, and therefore a DNA test can tell you which nutrients to take. Each individual link in that chain contains real science. The chain as a whole has never been shown to work.
What is true
The genes are genuinely ADHD-associated: variants in dopamine-related genes are among the most replicated findings in ADHD genetics (we cover them in detail in our article on ADHD genes and dopamine). And the nutrients are genuinely involved: B6 really is a cofactor for neurotransmitter synthesis, vitamin C really participates in catecholamine production, magnesium really supports neuronal signaling. None of that is controversial biochemistry.
The leap that has never been tested
The commercial claim requires something much stronger: that your specific variant creates a specific nutrient demand, and that supplementing based on your genotype improves ADHD symptoms. No clinical trial has demonstrated this. Not one. ADHD is polygenic, thousands of variants each contributing a tiny effect, so a handful of genotyped genes cannot meaningfully predict your brain chemistry, let alone your dietary needs. This is marketing running years ahead of evidence.
What real trials actually found, and the irony
Here is the part the posts never mention. Broad-spectrum micronutrients HAVE been tested in real randomized controlled trials, by Julia Rucklidge's group in New Zealand. In adults with ADHD (80 participants, double-blind, British Journal of Psychiatry, 2014) and in medication-free children aged 7 to 12 (93 participants, fully blinded, Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry, 2018), micronutrients modestly outperformed placebo: in the children's trial, 47% were rated much or very much improved versus 28% on placebo, with gains mainly in inattention, aggression and emotional regulation. The irony: everyone in those trials received the same formula. No DNA test, no genotype targeting, nothing personalized. The only micronutrient evidence that exists says nothing about genetic tailoring, because none was used.
What to do instead
If you suspect a nutrient issue, a blood test through your doctor measures your actual nutrient status directly, which no DNA inference can match. If you are curious about micronutrients for ADHD, the honest summary is: modest, real effects in trials, using broad formulas, worth discussing with a physician, especially alongside ADHD medication. And if a company offers to sell you both the DNA test and the supplement plan it recommends, that is a business model, not a diagnostic pathway.
